How to stop braces pain?

 How to stop braces pain?

You just had your braces? I bet the feeling is so different, isn't it? Braces, especially in the first week are the most painful stage. Don’t worry my friend, here we will help you with how to ease the braces pain. Moreover, we will tackle more helpful tips on how to reduce gum swelling and how to stop the braces pain immediately.

What Causes Braces Pain?

You should know that having discomfort after putting on braces is normal. You’re having pain with those braces because it is trying to push and pull the teeth to tighten and align with each other. For many, the experience is different as they could feel their jaws are sore or there could be an irritation of the brackets rubbing on their gums. However, if this pain goes on for more than 5 days, you might want to consult your orthodontist so they could take a look at what’s going on.

Why do Rubber Bands on Braces Hurt So Much?

First of all, you need to understand your braces and their functions. When your orthodontist asked you to have braces there must be a reason and I'm pretty sure the major reason for that is because your teeth are unaligned. Let me explain to you the function of your braces and the connection between why rubber bands on braces hurt so much.

The brackets are the most visible part of the braces. These are square metal pieces attached to the teeth. The archwires are the connectors in between those brackets. They are the ones who control the movement of the teeth. The metal rings are like supports, they are placed at the back of the teeth.

Now, the rubber bands or sometimes called, “elastic bands or ties” are attached to the brackets which are also used to connect the upper and lower jaws. These rubber bands are also used to help the archwires align the teeth. They function as an added pressure to correct your teeth and Jaw alignment. Having said that, this added pressure is the actual pain that you are feeling.

Sometimes, rubber bands can also cause gum sore when rubbed repeatedly as you chew or talk.

If pain relievers aren’t available which is an almost impossible situation, or if you prefer oral Anesthetics, well, there are a number of brands that produce this kind of gels. Benzocaine is the content of the oral Anesthetic. This helps relieve pain from such problems as toothache and swelling gum spots. But before using this, you might want to consult your Orthodontist first as this is not for everybody, especially for kids as it might have serious side effects.

How to use Anesthetic Gel?

  • Follow the direction as indicated on the product package. Usually, you just need to put a pea size amount of gel on a cotton swab or on your finger and rub it on your teeth and gums. Wait for about a minute before spitting it out and rinsing your mouth with warm water.

  • DO NOT USE MORE THAN 4 TIMES A DAY unless this is directed by your Orthodontist. Never put large amounts of this Gel as it may cause serious side effects.

  • Make sure you get your Orthodontist's approval before using this gel. An overdose of numbing medications can have fatal side effects

  •  Do not use the Anesthetic gel if you have asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or other breathing disorder as well as heart disease if you are simply, a smoker.
